Se le conoce como Castillo de Guzmán El Bueno debido a la heroica gesta de don Alonso Pérez de Guzmán, entonces alcaide de la fortaleza, quien en 1295 ve cómo el desleal don Juan, hermano del rey se sitúa con 5.000 jinetes árabes ante los muros de la ciudad y amenaza de muerte a su hijo, al que había hecho prisionero, si no entrega el castillo y rinde la plaza.
